Swedish Challenge Women’s Team Set to Compete in Groundbreaking First Women’s America’s Cup

The Swedish Challenge Women's Team, powered by Artemis Technologies, is poised to make history as they gear up for the inaugural Puig Women's America's Cup, set to take place in Barcelona from October 5-13, 2024.

This groundbreaking event will mark the first-ever Women’s America's Cup, and Sweden will be represented by a team of four elite sailors selected from the country’s top talent, supported by Sweden’s largest sailing clubs, the Royal Swedish Sailing Society and the Gothenburg Royal Sailing Society.

The final team, chosen from over 50 applicants, includes Vilma Bobeck and Rebecca Netzler, fresh off their silver medal win in the 49er FX at the 2024 Olympic Games in Marseille. Joining them are Julia Gross and Ida Svensson, forming a formidable crew that will aim to lead Sweden to victory. Felicia Fernström and Lovisa Karlsson, the latter an Olympic bronze medallist from Marseille, have been named as reserves.

Rebecca Netzler, reflecting on their upcoming challenge, said:

“I think we have a great chance of actually winning the cup. It's a very high goal and it's also a goal you share with the other teams, but you wouldn't start such a big project if you didn't believe in the chance to go all the way and have the will to win.”

Anna Östling, skipper of the Swedish Challenge Women's Team, said:

“We have an incredibly talented group of women who have worked tirelessly for this moment. Representing Sweden in the first Women’s America's Cup is a tremendous honour. Personally, I’m incredibly proud of what they’ve achieved, and I can’t wait to see them in action.”

The Puig Women's America's Cup will begin with preliminary rounds on October 5, with the grand final scheduled for October 13. The Swedish team, competing in Pool B, is expected to take to the waters on October 6, as they prepare to compete against the world’s top female sailors in the thrilling waters of Barcelona.
